Inlay and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are like fillings, but for more extensive repairs. They are strong restorations that are custom-made in a dental lab to fit your tooth perfectly. Here's how they work:
-
Made in the Lab: Unlike fillings that are applied directly in your mouth, inlays and onlays are created on a model of your tooth for a precise fit.
-
Strong and Durable: These restorations are made from long-lasting materials like composite, porcelain or gold, making them more durable than traditional fillings.
-
Inlays for Cavities: Inlays are designed to fit within the interior of a tooth, like a puzzle piece filling a cavity.
-
Onlays for Cusps: Onlays are larger than inlays and are used when damage extends to the chewing surface of the tooth, including one or more cusps (the pointed tips).
-
Crowns for All Surfaces: In comparison to onlays that cover part of the tooth, crowns (caps) entirely encase the entire tooth structure.
In short, inlays and onlays offer a stronger and more natural-looking alternative to fillings for repairing moderately damaged teeth. They are more conservative than a crown and are an excellent solution to help protect your teeth.
