Root Canal Therapy

A root canal is a dental procedure that treats an infected or inflamed tooth pulp, the soft tissue at the center of your tooth. It's a common treatment that can save a tooth that might otherwise need extraction.

Why is a Root Canal Needed?

The tooth pulp contains nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack, or trauma damages the pulp, it can become infected. This can cause pain, swelling, and sensitivity. Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further problems.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is usually done in one to two appointments. Here's a general overview:

  • Local anesthetic: The dentist will numb the area around the tooth to ensure you feel minimal discomfort during the procedure.

  • Accessing the Pulp: A small opening is made in the crown (top) of the tooth to access the pulp.

  • Removing the Pulp: The dentist carefully removes the infected pulp tissue and cleans and shapes the canals inside the root.

  • Filling and Sealing: The canals are filled with a special material to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then sealed with a filling.

  • Crown or Filling: In most cases, a crown is placed on the tooth to restore its strength and function. Sometimes, a permanent filling may suffice.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

  • Saves Your Tooth: Root canal treatment allows you to keep your natural tooth, which is better for chewing, speaking, and overall oral health.

  • Reduces Pain: By removing the infected pulp, root canal treatment relieves toothache and sensitivity.

  • Prevents Further Infection: The procedure prevents the infection from spreading to the jawbone and other teeth.

Recovering from Root Canal Treatment

After treatment, your tooth may be sensitive for a few days. Your dentist will prescribe medication to manage any discomfort. Following good oral hygiene practices and attending regular dental checkups will ensure the long-term health of your treated tooth.

Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

Modern dentistry and anesthetic techniques make root canal treatment a comfortable procedure. You may feel some pressure or discomfort during the procedure, but you shouldn't experience significant pain.
